Our big brother's got no heart,
when I get my chance I'm going to punch him in the nose, in the nose, in the nose

Nice to see Simon Amstell getting in the spirit of things up in Edinburgh.
On Sunday evening, Pandora's questing vole on the ground spotted the gawky comedian chatting with festival goers in the edgy hang-out the Forest Cafe.
"They all broke into a melody of Elton John songs," I'm told. "Simon was on the bongos. They were pretty crap, but hey ho, I suppose it's all part of the fun."

The Night Flyer

A disarming mix of puppetry, animation and live music, this show is by Paper Cinema, resident company at Forest Fringe - a venue that allows artists to take risks, and audiences to pay what they can. Should revolutionise the Fringe.

Not everything I saw today was wildly successful, but everything was genuinely having a go at creating something different. The spirit of this place is terrific. The avant-garde lives on in Forest Fringe, and all power to it.

hem... I don't mean to be funny but... all those articles refer to the events as being "free or pay-what-you-can" (in one instance, just "pay what you can"). Are we not free anymore? I mean, completely free, no pressure, no need to try and escape before the end to avoid the "passing the hat" act if you're broke, no feeling like shit if you don't give at least £2, even if you didn't like the performance that much?

We also had their photographer in the other day (Beth Elliot, who shot the series of images from the Peasance which are currently on their site). The images haven't appeared yet but they might still get posted, I hope.

Here they is... it's a shame that her shots from the current show in the gallery didn't make it too...

...my main reason to dismiss the pessimists came on Tuesday at the opening of the Forest Fringe. Yes, it's already had a ludicrous amount of press attention and the Guardian's very own Charlotte Higgins blogged there through yesterday, but without wanting to reiterate what everyone else has already said, the atmosphere there yesterday was an utter joy. The two shows I caught, by Tinned Fingers and Paper Cinema, shared a warm, witty, gloriously lo-fi aesthetic and a real sense of innovation. What was most thrilling, though, was the sheer size of Tuesday night's audience and the warmth of their response. The massive applause at the end of Paper Cinema's little show felt like something very special had just taken place.

The very fact the Forest Fringe exists at all is reason enough not to give up hope for the festival just yet. Probably in ten years' time it will have either faded away or expanded to ludicrous proportions with "pay-what-you-can" somehow institutionalised into "what-you-can-pay-is-£20", but it feels like there will always be another small venue waiting to explode onto the scene as a standing rebuke to any complacency. Yes, things have changed, but there's no need to start sending out funeral invitations just yet.
they call us winsome, but we're just hopeless

The list of Angel-winners this week is completed by Forest Fringe. A new intiative based at the Forest Cafe in Bristo Place and utilising the splendid hall above the cafe and its art gallery, Forest Fringe was co-directed by Andy Field and Deborah Pearson, who first brought work there last year. This year they programmed performances by groups including Fish and Game and Action Hero and artists including Nic Green and Lucy Ellinson, with the assistance of Battersea Arts Centre, a consistent supporter of new work. There were five shows a day at two-hourly intervals from Tuesday, August 5, through to Tuesday, August 19, and everything was free or Pay What You Can.

NOTE: Keep an eye out for online footage of a Rhian Van Winkle accepting the award

The Forest Fringe lives up to the hype. And they say we are free. Better late than never.

you have copyrighted your photograph?
Maybe it could work? But it will be a kaleidoscopic blend of mysterious shadows and rainbow hued-dreams seen through compassionate tears.
