European film tour next year

Post by Lynne » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:49 am

Attention film bookers, several items here:
(1) In April of 2009 noted American film archivist Ryan Daly will be touring Europe with 2 fascinating programs, one of which focuses on early works of famous directors such as Roman Polanski, Martin Scorsese, etc. - see attachment for details, and contact Ryan directly for more info at ryan@louisvillefilm.org

(2) The German underground filmmaker Wilhelm Hein and creative partner Annette Frick were recently in Copenhagen presenting slide shows ("Fuck Gender" about Berlin's sexual subculture) and historic underground films (by Otto Muehl, Günter Brus etc.) as well as Hein's own work. He has access to many rare historic underground films and we can highly recommend a visit (it was great). If interested contact Wilhelm directly at kintoppp@gmx.de

(3) 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of the end of censorship in Denmark (June 1969) - this might provide a programming opportunity to focus on groundbreaking Danish erotic cinema of the period. My own 1, 2 or 3 part program on the subject, which I have thus far presented in numerous cinemas in America and Europe, might be ideal in this capacity. ... I myself will also be touring Europe with several other film programs from mid-September to mid-October 2009 - answer this e-mail for more info.

(4) I still offer a free "print finding service" - if you are looking for a rare film to show and want it on FILM, contact me and I will circulate your request with an association of print archives in America and Europe.

(5) In addition to the amazing VIVA (see www.lifeofastar.com) we now also have a 16mm technicolor print of director Anna Biller's 26 minute work from 2001, "A Visit From the Incubus." (If VIVA hasn't played in your town yet, it should - on our glorious 35mm print!)
Cordially, Jack Stevenson Film Archive

He has worked on music videos for Wax Fang and The Whigs plus shown films in barns, warehouses, cornfields, bars, galleries, museums, and universities.

(2): BEYOND A SHADOW OF THE MOON: Achievements and Illusions from the Golden Era of the Space Age, 1957 -1986

Synopsis: Lasting roughly 30 years, the Space Age was characterized by rapid advancements in rocketry, materials science, computers, robots and other achievements. At the same time, animators, salesmen, and filmmakers were envisioning the last frontier: Otter Space. Combining science fact with science fiction, this 72 minute compilation film examines both the nature of fantasy and the dimension of reality. Contrasting the instructive mission of NASA training films, the absurdity of science fiction films, and the sales pitch for consumer products; this exploration of otter space illustrates a world where fantasy and reality collide, compliment, and compete for the future of mankind.

Program highlights: NASA, an agency of the United States Government responsible for the nation’s public space program, released hundreds of films documenting the Space Age, from material testing, to space walks to launch sequences. Beyond a Shadow of the Moon collages sequences from these films with popular entertainment like the animated Rocket Robin Hood, a Canadian serial that sets the classic legend of Robin Hood in a futuristic, otter space setting; the cartoon serial Space Angel which displays the démodé syncro-vox lip technique; the Robot Institute’s infomercial Robot Revolution; British Television show Space: 1999; the trailer for Ralph Bakshi’s animated Wizards; the trailer for the X-rated soft core porn parody Flesh Gordon; plus trailers for Star Wars, Lost in Space, Westworld, Logan’s Run, Rollerball, 2001 Space Odyssey, Forbidden Planet, Planet of the Apes amongst others.
