Sound Engineer Training

Post by Abby » Sun Jun 22, 2008 5:01 pm

As a night manager I am sick of being completely useless when people come and ask about how to set up their instruments and the dvd etc. and always having to look for the same people to come and do it. Could we have some kind of workshop day where a bunch of us get together and really learn whats what on the big flashy board? Then we could have a list of people who know whats what. And we could write some kind of simple instuction manual? Go Team!

I'm up for that. I can teach people a lot of that stuff. I can plug up the mics and the sound desk and make sound come out of it. But I don't have the ear for all that bass/treble equalizer fine tuning stuff. Maybe someone else is up for that?

Pockets is super knowledgable about all this stuff. I asked him to show me it all at some point. I'll see if he's free of an evening, let's set a date.

i'd like to attend and can help out if required, though pockets is the win for knowledge on the forest's audio equipment.

it would be a good idea to get the turn on/turn off procedure for a) the general café music b) the dvd player/projector and c) the mixing desk (anything else?) all written down in case peeps who can't attend this need to know.

ok, im up for showing people some stuff but..... even I dont know everything.

i kind of know more about the ear thing rather than the techy side of things.

so, shane would be a great guy to get involved, bill aswell (if you can get a hold of him).

I spoke to pockets on sun about this after mixing for a band who may otherwise have been up jobby creek without a paddle had I not been there to scrape by. I am willing to join in with an eye on future emergencies. A quick text or call could make the diference to some performers sound.
I really dis like competition and posessiveness though, so let me know if there is going to be any of this stuff, it sucks.

im gonna check my calander.

i would realy like it to be a sunday morning b4 the cafe is open so that we can make all kinds of weird noised without pissing pople off (thats if the vollies are ok with it)

on the thingy in my head.

1.0 plugging stuff in.
1.1 where everything lives (and should live)
2.0 making sound appear.
3.0 what do check if there is no sound.
4.0 tips on making sound sound good.
5.0 turning the projector on and making dvd/chs/laptop work.

anyone wanna add to this??

maybe not the 6th ... I've just noticed some events down south on the 5th, and I'll be in the area anyway, so I will try to go.

I'd like to come to this too. I quite often get asked to help out with the stuff since people know I do techy stuff, and then I wind up tracing cables and figuring something out on the spot. It would be good to know how everything's actually supposed to work.

It's up to Pockets (and Shane and Nix if they want to take part, or whoever).

Just set a date, we can do another one another time if necessary if anyone can't make it.

my company is currently looking to increase the number of sound and lighting engineers on their roster so anyone (or anyone you know) who has good experience and can handle a variety of different set-ups and venues confidently and would like to earn some money (if you're booked for an event that is) please PM me.
Sorry for the shameless plug.
