Possible laptop delivery happening

this has nothing to do with the work of the kitchen working group, but it's the kitchen managers that need to know about it: there may be a laptop being delivered to the forest soon by someone called Kevin. I am not sure if it is happening or not. If it does come, it is for the listening station pro...

I agree with what Ryan said, we should cast a wide net in terms of having fewer working groups with broader definitions that will attract more people to less but bigger meetings. If we have a meeting of this working group, and it's obvious that some people have come to build things with wood and nai...

Yeah I think fixing the cafe's computers and Internet has more in common with this group than the website too. I don't know anything about the website and am not sure I want to. Looks complicated. There's web coding, and there's computer fixing. The fixing involves things like: * Sourcing second han...

I dunno. I worry about fracturing things too much by having too many too specific working groups with too few members each. Then again, there's probably little point in having a meeting with the computer geeks and the DIY experts if they are not the same jobs. There is some overlap: there is one pro...

Stuff that needs doing

Memory dump: * Listening station. Me and Erik from edlug/infoseed are trying to get hold of an old laptop which we can recycle into a dedicated listening station. We just need a working laptop with semi-decent sound and hard disk space that we can install a dedicated Linux setup on. Chris is off the...

Jamendo -- Free (Creative Commons) Music Of The Future!

There's much maligning of Big Copyright music and the big publishers who monopolise the distribution of all the music and put copyrights on the CDs that say you can't copy it, can't give it to a friend, can't play it in The Forest. These people are ripping off the consumers and the artists alike. I ...

Infoseed might be a good idea as they offer very good prices. You'd be best off putting Ubuntu on it rather than Windows. Don't buy a new computer, that's just a pointless waste. If you want something that comes with a warranty, you could buy a second-hand refurbished one from a shop (which is more ...

There was some talk about getting Linux/Free Software on the forest's jukebox/mac machine as well. I don't particularly want to push for this to happen quickly right now, but I found some music software that I think would be good to use so I thought I'd share. In case anyone is interested, I came across a new project aimed at resolving this confusion about how "Free/Libre" applies to the copyrighting of music, art and other stuff that isn't computer software: Benjamin Mako Hill's article 'Towards a Standard of Freedom: Creative Commons and the Free Softwa...

Linux workshop in Infoseed on Saturday if you're interested

A bunch of us will be in the Infoseed lab downstairs on Saturday from 11am installing Linux for people. I'm willing to do a 30 min. 'how to use Ubuntu Linux' workshop if anyone is interested. It might be useful for people from The Forest to learn how to use it properly, particularly how to configure...

Well, there are hundreds of distributions of Linux, many of which are very different from each other. Some are very good. Some are very bad. Some are made for geeks who know everything about linux. Some are made for normal people. What distribution of linux did you use at work, and how recent was it...

Hey-ho. About the ambiguity of using 'non-copyright' music. It's true that coopyright applies to everything, but a copyright license can be used by its owner in two ways: 1. Linux on the Forest computers

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just wanted to let people know that I'll be the linux contact for the forest if you have any problems or want anything done with linux on your computers. I live with Jane, Di (Dy, Die?) and Shannon, so the Forest has my phone number and you can...
