Mural Proposal. Cassie .

Post by nix » Tue Mar 30, 2010 7:04 pm

ONWARDS AND NORTHWARDS...
I intend to create a piece inspired by the coastal journey from Sheffield to Edinburgh. I will build text into a visual composition in order to create a piece of concrete poetry, illustrating the changing scenery of the dramatic landscape. I wrote the text whilst travelling the coastline to come to The Forest for this week's placement.

My work often involves both text and visual elements and I would be excited to have the opportunity to create this piece in The Forest, incorporating interactive and site specific aspects. This placement makes up part of my MA course and it would be really valuable and rewarding to have the experience of creating a piece like this for a space like The Forest. Ideally, I would like to site it on the wall above the stairs (either the first flight from the piano, or the second flight up to the window) as this would link really well to the idea of a journey upwards/northwards.

The piece will be executed using marker pen (for the text) alongside recycled paper, card and maps, to build up texture and contours, reminiscent of an ordinance survey map. I intend to use PVA to attach and protect the layers. Building up the recycled materials is visually effective and by using artefacts such as maps and musical scores I will create a sense of fragmented memories associated with the places visited in the journey. Below is the text I will incorporate:

Streaming forwards, bounding northwards
as indigo skies over the steel city
give way to endless acres of emerald shoots,
laid out in a symmetrical patchwork;
stitched by hedgerow and stone.

Dawn breaks over Doncaster.
Fresh rays of steaming sunlight
cast unexpected beauty
over a sleepy city's
crumpled morning complexion.

Heaving waterways whip away
as the mechanical steed gallops.
Heavy-faced cobs plod and sigh
inside their wiry beards.

The grey expanse of the Tyne
opens up below.
Sublime but not beautiful.
A churning sewer
under the monochrome sky.

Onwards and Northwards
onwards and northwards,
the landscape simplifies,
the opening bars of an opus to the sea,
as the land courts her in with the tide.

Suddenly down.
Rocks and rocks and rocks.
Surf and froth and surf and froth.
A speckle of houses
plopped into the mud.

Onwards and Northwards
onwards and northwards.
Sliding down
off the land.

A patch of glowing sky
makes a halo for the coast,
collecting like briny crystals
in the back of the throat.

Tufty turf leaps upwards
and steals the view again.
Chapters and chapters
and chapters and chapters
of terminated cargo carriages
repeat like Soviet duplo
grey and angled and still.

Brushy bushes
trim the horizon
like rusted razorwire.

Paint peels
but marshy grasses
stand paperthin and strong

The sky stands low and heavy
glowering at the crows.

Onwards and northwards
onwards and northwards
under a northern sky.

Although this may seem like quite a lot of text, it will make up the body of the piece in an illustrative, visual style.

It's hard to tell with just that one image to go by.

I think it could be quite good, and I really like the texture/contour ideas she talks about.

I'd be up for seeing it somewhere in the building, but I'm not totally convinced about such a prominent (and big!!) space as the stairs leading up to the hall.

I sent two more images through to give some more ideas, I'll see if I can post them too. I'm aware that the stairs are a prominant position and that another artist has expressed interest in doing some work there but I'd be happy for the piece to be temporary if another, more desirable proposal was suggested in future. If you don't think this space is an option, where do you suggest? I'm really keen to give my best to the piece and will need tomorrow as a working day if possible.
